What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that can examine several areas of a person's functioning, including cognitive (thinking) abilities, academic skills,  and social-emotional/behavioural functioning. Assessments can help identify personal strengths and factors impeding an individual's ability to reach their full potential. The goal is to provide practical, individualized recommendations to support personal growth at school, work, and in daily life.

ADHD

A comprehensive ADHD assessment can provide insight on how executive functioning, impulse control, and inattention affect you or your childs daily life. An assessment can provide tailored stragies to improve quality of life and recommendations for supports and services at school and work.

Learning

We provide comprehensive psychoeducational assessments that address learning-related concerns. Results can be shared with schools to ensure access to accommodations, additional services, and the development of an Individualized Program Plan (IPP).

Behaviour & Mental Health

We offer comprehensive behaviour and mental health assesments to explore concerns related to anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress. An assessment can provide valuable resources and information to guide treatment planning.

Giftedness

We offer gifted assessments for admission to specialized programs, such as CBE Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE), Calgary Catholics School Districts Congregated Gifted Program, and Westmount Charter.

PDD/AISH

We complete the assessments required to determine eligibility for government-funded supports and services such as Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program and the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program.

If you or your child...

Learning

  • Have learning difficulties in a specific academic area ( reading, writing, or math).

  • Experience frustration with learning​ or avoid schoolwork.

  • Require extra support to understand/grasp academic concepts.

  • Are bored in school or are learning above grade-level.

  • Are considering entrance into a specialized program requiring assessment for application (e.g., Westmount Charter School, Foothills Academy, Calgary Academy, and GATE).

Social-Emotional/Behaviour

  • Have problems with sustained attention.

  • Experience challenges with organization, time management or task initiation.

  • Experience Impulsivity, hyperactivity, or behaviour regulation challenges.

  • Have interpersonal/ social challenges.

  • Experience emotional difficulties, including anger, anxiety, depression or low motivation.

  • Avoid attending school or social situations.

  • Have difficulty coping with past traumatic events.

  • Are experiencing difficulties with independent living related to intellectual disabilities.

  • Are transitioning to adulthood and need support (AISH and PDD applications).

  • Are transitioning to high school and require information for course selection.

  • Are transitioning to a post-secondary institution and need academic accommodations.​​

  • Are struggling to meet vocational demands and may require support/accommodations.

The Assessment Process

  • Intake meeting (informed consent and gathering background information).

  • A review of relevant documents (previous and current report cards, medical documents, and IPPs).

  • Cognitive and academic testing.

  • Interviews with family members and teachers (as required).

  • Rating scales/questionnaires completed by parents, family members, and teachers (as required).

  • Analysis and interpretation of results from all measures.

  • Writing of the comprehensive psychoeducational report.

  • Results meeting (reviewing assessment findings, discussion of recommendations and program planning).

  • Parents and/or clients are provided with a copy of the comprehensive psychoeducational report.

Potential outcomes of a psychoeducational assessment

  • Assessments can diagnose learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia, as well as other issues like ADHD, which might affect academic or job performance.

  • Assessments can reveal emotional or behavioural issues (such as anxiety or depression) that impact learning or day-to-day functioning.

  • Assessments can guide academic programming, interventions, and accommodations to support struggling learners.

  • Assessments can inform the development of Individualized Program Plans (IPPs) and ensure access to learning accommodations, such as extra time on tests or assistive technology.

  • Assessments can provide valuable suggestions and resources for students, families, and educators to improve functioning and promote positive outcomes. 

  • Assessments may be required to apply for community supports, including Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD)​, Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), and Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD). 

  • Assessments can be used to gain entrance to specialized learning programs such as GATE, Westmount Charter School, Calgary Academy, and Foothills Academy.​
